Surface Mobile Equipment Safety Program

The New Surface Mobile Equipment Standard provides information to employers and workers on what are required for the Surface Mobile Equipment Safety Program. 

These requirements ensure procedures are in place to safeguard the health and safety of workers and the public. This program is to aid with the other part 56 standards on Mobile Equipment, such as Lockout/Tag procedures, Parking Procedures, Brakes, hazard assessment, Traffic control, PPE, etc.

In 2021, nine miners were killed and 185 have been injured in accidents involving powered haulage equipment such as shuttle cars, scoops, locomotives, front end loaders. Haul trucks and more. Year to date, this is the highest number of powered haulage fatalities since 2006

SURFACE MOBILE EQUIPMENT just a few Accident Causes:

  • Improper or failure to complete a pre-shift inspection
  • Improper or failure to LO/TO a defective piece of equipment
  • Failure to wear seat belts (Number 1 cause of Fatals)
  • Poor line of sight
  • Mounting/dismounting equipment in an unsafe manner
  • Lack of proper training
  • Inadequate supervision

The safety of mining’s most precious resource – the miner – is a critical mission for all mining operations and contractors who work on the mine sites.  Hopefully this program will help to save lives and prevent injuries occurring with mobile equipment.
